What is organic (organic) cotton?
From the 1960s and 1970s, in search of higher yields, more and more industries began to use chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers). “Pure” cotton, grown by all previous generations using the “natural” method, only recently started to be produced again and is now called “ORGANIC COTTON” to distinguish it from conventional cotton and to reflect its method of production: without chemical agentsIn order to classify cotton as organic, it must be demonstrated that a number of strict requirements are strictly adhered to:
- The seeds must not be GMO.
- Cotton must be sown and grown in soil that has not been treated with prohibited substances for at least three years prior to the cotton harvest.
- Cultures should not be treated with toxic substances.
- When harvesting, use only natural methods (manual harvesting, no machines, etc.)
If at least one of the conditions is violated, the product receives another label: “Fair Trade”. It is a kind of quality certificate confirming the partial ethics of the product.

Traditional methods are used in the cultivation of organic cotton. Hand-picking the cotton has nothing but advantages: only fully ripe seeds are selected, as well as the prevention of impurities in production.
After harvest, the fibers are separated from the seeds and processed separately, which improves the quality of the product. Because organic cotton is the work of smallholdings and farms, traditional and ancient irrigation methods are used to grow it, using much less water than modern methods of cotton production. Water is channeled directly to plant roots, reducing water loss due to evaporation.

In the production of organic cotton, there is no use of chemical synthesis products, but natural means of pest control, such as pheromone traps, various plants and others. Weeds are removed manually. Only natural organic fertilizers are used to enrich the soil, along with alternative planting methods.
